Vegetable & Herb Gardens

A vegetable garden for the Chicago residence can be a great source of food, fun, and health. And for children, the vegetable garden can be a terrific arena for discovery and experimentation.

The biggest challenge in the urban vegetable garden is committing the space to grow only food items. A dedicated plot will yield the best results year in and year out. Once a plot is determined, you can then select the veggies you’d like to see on your plate. While not all vegetables will grow ideally in the Chicago, urban environment, numerous possibilities abound. We will work with you to select the best veggie choices for your site and your palate!

Can’t commit to the space? How about tucking in some tomato plants amongst perennials in sun-soaked spots? Or, consider filling some containers with a handful of pepper plants and herbs this year.

Chicago Area Vegetables

Here is a partial list of foods which consistently perform well in Chicago:

  • Spring: Cool season growers such as lettuce, spinach, arugula, peas and carrots.
  • Summer: Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, herbs and more!
  • Fall: Return to cool season growers like peas, salad greens, endive and kale.
